THT Assembly

At Prodel, we embrace every challenge in the design, assembly, and testing of all types of electronic circuits and devices.

THT Assembly (Through-Hole Technology)

Our operations are not limited solely to electronic device design, as we also provide electronics manufacturing services utilizing through-hole technology (THT).

WHAT IS THT ASSEMBLY?

Through-hole technology (THT) is a proven and precise method for mounting electronic components onto a printed circuit board (PCB). In a literal sense, the expansion of the acronym suggests a process of passing something through a hole. In technical terms, this is specifically referred to as through-hole technology (THT).

THROUGH-HOLE ASSEMBLY AND COMPONENT PLACEMENT

All components designed for THT assembly feature leads in the form of wires. These are used to thread them through holes in the printed circuit board (PCB). During the PCB manufacturing process, holes are drilled at the locations of the components, to which signals are transmitted via conductive traces.

Component placement and soldering are performed either manually or automatically. The leads of the electronic components are threaded through dedicated holes. Subsequently, they are soldered to solder pads located on the side opposite to the component.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THT AND SMT ASSEMBLY?

SMT assembly differs significantly from the previously described through-hole assembly. Surface-mount components are not equipped with wire leads; instead, they are mounted directly onto the surface of the board rather than through to the opposite side. SMD components are soldered using a bonding agent in the form of solder paste. This paste is applied to the solder pads using a specialized stencil. In the next stage, the SMD component is placed onto the solder pads. The soldering process is carried out using reflow technology in a specialized soldering oven.

This type of assembly is fully automated.

APPLICATION OF PROTECTIVE COATINGS

Finished electronic circuits manufactured using through-hole technology (THT) are used in a variety of conditions. They are found not only in sealed and well-insulated enclosures but also in locations where they are frequently exposed to various atmospheric factors. For this reason, finished boards and their components must be properly protected.

To achieve this, protective coatings are applied as part of the THT assembly process. Their purpose is to protect the entire circuit from damage. The primary protective agents used include: insulating lacquers, silicones, and resins. Lacquer provides effective protection against moisture and prevents contaminants from penetrating the circuit. Silicone, on the other hand, is designed to properly secure components in the solder fields and prevent them from shifting due to various vibrations.

CABLE HARNESSES

Cables and power leads are essential for the proper functioning of electronic circuits. They ensure that the correct amount of current is delivered to the system, primarily through the proper selection of the conductor and the appropriate cable thickness.

The production of cable harnesses is a highly demanding task. It involves precisely cutting the wire and ensuring its thorough insulation. In many cases, this insulation protects against short circuits in the event of unintended contact between an uninsulated part and the circuit. The entire wire harness is bound together using heat-shrink materials and then soldered to the circuits at specific points.

COMPONENT ASSEMBLY INSPECTION

Nothing is released into circulation until it has passed inspection. The THT assembly and entire production process conclude with a precise, automated optical inspection. Its purpose is to verify the integrity and correctness of all circuits.

The inspection results provide detailed information regarding the presence of:

  • short circuits,

  • open circuits,

  • incorrectly selected components, such as resistors, transformers, or capacitors.

The entire THT assembly verification process is fully automated and conducted in accordance with the guidelines set forth in the IPC-A-610 standard. This ensures that we receive the most precise feedback possible.
